Cartmel is home. We are based in the village, which means that for anyone on the peninsula we are not a contractor travelling in from somewhere else — we are ten minutes down the road, and we can come back if something needs looking at.
Working in the village
Cartmel is a small medieval village built around its priory, with a conservation area, a great many listed buildings and lanes that were never intended for anything wider than a cart. Working here is an exercise in doing things carefully and quietly, and being local helps enormously — we know which lanes a wagon will get down, when the village is impossible because of the races, and which neighbours to warn before a delivery arrives.
Access is frequently the deciding factor on price. Getting plant and materials in often means small machines, careful timing and sometimes hand-balling material the last stretch. We would far rather price that realistically at the outset than start a job and discover the wagon cannot get past the square.
Listed buildings and sympathetic work
A high proportion of property in and around Cartmel is listed or sits within the conservation area, which affects boundary walls, surfacing, and any alteration to the setting of a building. Listed building consent is a separate matter from planning permission and it can apply to work people assume is trivial.
Our approach is simple: local stone, traditional detailing, lime-based mortars where the building demands it rather than modern cement that will trap moisture in old stonework, and a conversation about consent before rather than after. If we think a job needs a heritage-aware specification, we will say so.
Heritage garden work
We rebuilt the Dutch Garden at Graythwaite Hall, a Grade II* registered garden and Thomas Mawson’s first major commission, after box blight destroyed the original parterre. If you have historic garden structure that needs work doing sympathetically, it is the kind of job we take seriously.
The wider peninsula
Out of the village towards Allithwaite, Flookburgh, Holker and the racecourse the ground opens up and the work changes — driveways, drainage, paddock fencing and larger garden projects with room for a machine. The low-lying land towards the bay drains poorly and land drainage is a recurring request, particularly on the mosses where the water table sits close to the surface all winter.
Grange-over-Sands is five minutes away, Ulverston and Newby Bridge not much more. If you are anywhere on this peninsula, we are almost certainly your closest option.
