Ambleside sits at the head of Windermere where several valleys meet, hemmed in by fells and threaded with becks. It is one of the wettest places we work, and almost every job here has a water dimension to it.
Water comes down the hill whether you planned for it or not
With Stock Ghyll running through the middle of the town and steep ground on nearly every side, Ambleside properties routinely deal with water arriving from above rather than simply falling on them. That is a different problem from a waterlogged flat lawn, and it needs a different answer — usually interception. A French drain across the top of a plot, taking water round a building rather than letting it arrive at the wall, solves more Ambleside damp problems than any amount of work at the bottom of the garden.
It is also why we are fussy about falls on patios and paths here. A terrace that drains back towards the house is a nuisance in Kendal and a genuine problem in Ambleside.
Slate, stone and small gardens
The town is built of slate and it shows. Local green and blue-grey slate looks right here in a way that imported stone rarely manages, and we use it where the budget allows — particularly on properties in the conservation area or attached to listed buildings.
Gardens tend to be small, steep and walled, so the work is intricate: retaining walls, steps, small terraces, and getting materials in through a house or down a passage. That is slow, careful work and we price it as such rather than pretending it is a quick job.
National Park and access
Ambleside is firmly inside the Lake District National Park, so consent requirements are tighter and tree protection is widespread. Vehicle access in the centre is genuinely difficult in season. We plan deliveries and muck away for early starts and quieter days — it keeps the job moving and keeps us on decent terms with your neighbours.
