Staveley sits where the Kentmere valley narrows, between Kendal and Windermere, with the Kent and the Gowan running through it. It is a popular village with a lot of well-kept property — and a lot of gardens on the valley floor that have a complicated relationship with water.
Riverside gardens
The village has flooded, and properties near the rivers here plan accordingly. When we work on those plots we assume high water will happen again: no surfacing that traps water against a building, permeable materials wherever they are appropriate, and drainage designed with somewhere realistic for the water to go rather than a soakaway in ground that is already wet.
It also affects planting. There is no sense putting in a border that drowns every second winter — on those gardens we plant for wet feet, or we raise the levels and improve the ground first.
Valley-side plots
Up the sides of the valley the problem inverts: thin soil over rock, steep gradients and gardens that shed water rather than holding it. Those need terracing, retaining and often topsoil brought in, and they reward a bit of thought about shelter — the wind funnels down the valley and it will find any planting that has not been given cover.
A convenient place for us to work
Staveley is a few minutes from our base and directly on the route between Kendal and Windermere, so it is easy for us to get to for a site visit and easy to come back to if something needs a second look. For smaller jobs, that convenience shows up in the price.
The village sits inside the Lake District National Park, so the usual tighter permitted development rules and tree protections apply.
