Milnthorpe sits on the A6 between Kendal and Carnforth, at the head of the Kent estuary and on the edge of the Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape. It is a straightforward place to work and a convenient base for everything along the southern edge of our patch.
Estuary ground and the water table
Being close to the estuary brings a high water table on the lower-lying plots, and that shapes what is possible. Soakaways perform poorly where the ground is already saturated, and there is little point putting one in below a water table that rises to meet it. On those sites the answer is usually to move water away rather than try to make it disappear downwards — and knowing which situation you are in requires digging a hole and looking, not guessing.
Higher up, towards Ackenthwaite and the limestone, it is a different story entirely and drainage is much more forgiving.
Limestone country
The Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape is limestone, and shallow rock is common on the rising ground. That is worth knowing before anyone quotes you for fence posts or a drainage run — a job priced on the assumption of easy digging can look very different when it meets rock at a foot down. We trial-hole first and price on what is actually there.
The compensation is that the stone is beautiful and it is local. Limestone walling, steps and edging suit properties here far better than anything brought in.
Rural and equestrian work
The land around Milnthorpe, Beetham and Heversham brings a steady stream of paddock fencing, field gates, stock fencing and gateway repairs, plus land drainage on grazing that has gone sour. We have the plant to work a field without churning it, and we would rather do a gateway properly once than patch it every winter.
