Timber work and lighting: a raised deck lit at the edges so it can be used after dark, and a boardwalk running through planting to a hot tub at the top of the garden.
Lighting is what makes a deck earn its keep
In this part of the country it is dark by four o’clock for a good stretch of the year, and an unlit deck is a summer-only asset. Recessed lights set into the boards and the risers cost very little at build stage, when the cabling can be run before anything is decked over, and they roughly double the number of evenings the space gets used.
Retrofitting the same thing afterwards means lifting boards. It is always worth deciding at the start.
The boardwalk
A raised boardwalk gets you across soft or sloping ground without the excavation a path would need, and it keeps planting running right up underneath rather than being cut back for a hard edge. It also stays usable in a wet Cumbrian winter, which a gravel path on clay does not.
