Ulverston sits just outside the National Park boundary on the edge of the Furness peninsula, and that makes it a noticeably easier place to work than the towns up the valleys — flatter ground, better access, and planning that is not subject to National Park restrictions.
Easier ground, bigger jobs
Because access is better and the ground is gentler, Ulverston is where we take on more of the larger work: full driveways, substantial groundworks packages, commercial hardstanding and fencing runs measured in hundreds of metres rather than tens. A machine can generally get where it needs to go, and muck can be taken away by lorry rather than by trailer.
That has a direct effect on price. The same driveway costs meaningfully less to build here than on a terraced street in Kendal, purely because of what a machine can reach.
Town centre and the older streets
Central Ulverston is a different proposition — cobbled streets, tight courtyards and a conservation area covering much of the historic core. There we are back to small plant and careful access, and to material choices that suit the setting rather than fighting it.
Smallholdings, paddocks and the surrounding villages
The land around Ulverston, out towards Swarthmoor, Pennington and the Lickle valley, brings a steady run of rural work: stock fencing, field gates, farm tracks, gateways that have turned to mud, and land drainage on grazing that has stopped draining. This is bread-and-butter work for us and we have the plant to do it without wrecking the field getting to it.
