Slate Courtyard & Retaining Wall

Cutting a sheltered, level courtyard out of a slope — held by a drystone retaining wall, paved in local slate, and framed so the valley view does the rest.

Cutting in rather than building up

On a falling site you can either build out on made ground or cut into the bank. Cutting in gives you a courtyard with its back to the hill: sheltered from the wind, private, and sitting on undisturbed ground rather than on fill that will settle.

It costs more because the spoil has to come out and the retaining wall has to be right. What you get is a space that is usable on days when an exposed terrace simply is not.

Slate underfoot

Local slate is dense, wears extremely well and holds its colour, and against Lakeland stone walls nothing imported quite matches it. Laid on a full bed with falls set to take water away from the building and out through the wall.
