Landscaping & Groundworks in Kendal

Kendal is our home patch and the town we work in most. Everything from small terraced yards off Highgate to full groundworks packages on the newer developments around the edge of town.

What working in Kendal actually involves

The old part of town is built on a slope, in limestone, with the River Kent running through the middle of it. That gives us three recurring themes: access, levels and water.

Access is the big one. The yards and ginnels off Highgate and Stricklandgate were laid out for handcarts, not for a three-tonne excavator. A great deal of our Kendal work involves either a micro digger that will go through a standard gateway, or barrowing by hand and pricing it honestly. We will tell you at the site visit which it is going to be.

Levels. Gardens running up towards Kendal Castle or down off Windermere Road are rarely flat. Making a usable terrace usually means cutting in, retaining the bank and getting drainage behind the wall — and that is a groundworks job with a patio on top, not a paving job.

Water. Storm Desmond in December 2015 hit Kendal hard, and the town has been living with the consequences and the flood defence works ever since. Surface water management is taken seriously here, and rightly so. On any hard surfacing we do in town we design for the water to soak away on your own plot rather than adding to what is heading for the Kent.

Kendal conservation area

A large part of central Kendal is a conservation area, and there are a great many listed buildings within it. That affects what surfaces and boundary treatments are appropriate — and it means trees have protection whether or not they carry a Tree Preservation Order, with six weeks’ notice required before any work. We factor that in rather than discovering it midway.

It is also why we do a lot of work in local stone here. Slate and limestone sit right against the grey buildings the town is named for; imported buff sandstone very often does not.
