Landscaping & Groundworks in Sedbergh

Sedbergh is in Cumbria but it is not in the Lake District — the town sits inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park, under the Howgill Fells. It is the most rural end of our patch and the work reflects that: more walling, more land drainage, more tracks and gateways, fewer ornamental patios.

Walling country

The drystone walls running up the Howgills and along the Rawthey are a defining part of this landscape, and they need constant work. Gapping, rebuilding after stock or weather damage, re-coping walls that have lost their tops — this is the area where we do most of our traditional walling, in the local stone and to the local pattern.

Field boundaries here are frequently protected features and removing or altering one can require consent, even where repairing it does not. Worth establishing before work rather than after.

Fell ground and farm infrastructure

Steep ground, thin soil and a lot of rain make for hard-working farm infrastructure. Tracks wash out, gateways turn to a quagmire, and land drainage on grazing stops working when the outfalls silt up. We do a good deal of that unglamorous but genuinely useful work — properly constructed tracks with a real sub-base and cross drainage, gateways stoned up so they survive a winter, and land drains laid to a fall that actually holds.

We have the plant to work on fell ground and the sense to know when conditions mean it should wait a fortnight.

A different national park

Because Sedbergh falls within the Yorkshire Dales National Park rather than the Lake District, planning matters go to the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. It catches people out — including contractors from over the hill who assume otherwise. We know which door to knock on.

Sedbergh is at the far edge of our normal radius, so for smaller jobs we will usually try to group it with other work in the area. Ring and ask — we get over that way regularly.
