A full package of groundworks for a Scout site: level bases for a set of new camping pods, new paths linking the site together, fencing, and outdoor spaces for groups to gather in. All of it built to take hard, year-round use by a lot of children in wet weather.
What we built
- Pod bases — level, properly founded bases for the new camping pods, set out so the pods sit true and drain away from the doors
- Footpaths — new paths linking the pods, the facilities and the main site, built to stay usable in winter rather than turning into a mud run
- Fencing — new boundary and internal fencing
- Group spaces — outdoor areas for gathering, activities and campfire use
Building for a site like this
A Scout site is a harder brief than a private garden, for one simple reason: the traffic. A domestic path takes a few people a day in decent shoes. This takes a hundred children at once, in the rain, in wellies, all term and all summer. Anything underspecified fails in the first season.
So the paths got a proper sub-base rather than a scrape and a sprinkle of gravel, and the falls were set so water leaves the surface instead of standing on it. The pod bases were founded and levelled properly, because a pod on a base that settles unevenly is a door that will not shut a year later.
The constraints that mattered
Everything here had to be safe for children, low-maintenance for volunteers, and built to last on a budget that comes from fundraising rather than a developer. That combination shapes every decision — it is worth spending on the sub-base and saving on the surface, never the other way round.
Working around the group
Sites like this run on volunteers and are in use most weekends. We programmed the work around what was booked, kept the compound tight and fenced, and left the site safe every night rather than at the end of the job. Everything was covered by our usual RAMS, risk assessments and method statements.
Community and commercial work
We take on a fair amount of this kind of work — scout and guide sites, village halls, sports clubs, campsites and holiday parks.
