Traditional drystone walling, built by hand in local stone: curved retaining walls holding back a bank, steps worked into the structure, and a long field boundary rebuilt on its original line.
Built the Westmorland way
Two faces with a deliberate inward batter, tied together with through stones and packed solid with hand-placed hearting, topped with cams set on edge. No mortar anywhere in it — the strength is entirely in how the stones lock together.
The retaining sections are built differently from the free-standing boundary: a heavier batter, larger stone at the base, and a drainage layer behind so water pressure cannot push the face out. It is the same craft but a different piece of engineering, and it is why we price the two separately.
Stone from the site
Where a wall has collapsed the original stone is nearly always still lying in the grass, and reusing it is both cheaper and the only way to get a repair that does not announce itself. Where we had to make up a shortfall we matched to the existing wall rather than to whatever was cheapest.
